Google’s annual “Year in Search” report has unveiled the top topics that captured Nigerians’ attention in 2024, offering a fascinating glimpse into the nation’s collective curiosity and priorities.

Compiled from billions of Google searches across the country, the rankings shows trending interests in news, personalities, culture, and more.

The results are categorized based on news, personalities, meaning, songs, questions, movies, and devices. Google determines these trends using anonymized and aggregated data to identify spikes in search activity.

The top-ranking question was, “How much is dollar to naira today?”, a reflection of Nigerians’ concern with the performance of the currency.

The naira has faced significant challenges throughout 2024. It experienced sharp depreciation, with the exchange rate reaching as low as ₦1,730 per US dollar in October.

Despite interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), including the introduction of the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS), the naira struggled to stabilize. Factors such as lower forex supply and high demand for foreign currency contributed to its volatility.
