U.S. President Biden, 80, announces bid for second term

Mr Biden will be 81 years old at the time of the election in about one and a half years. At the end of a possible second term, he would be 86.

U.S. President Joe Biden says he will run for another term in office, a major decision for the country considering his age.

– Why this matters

He has been in office since January 2021; he moved into the White House as the oldest president ever.

Mr Biden will be 81 years old at the time of the election in about one and a half years. At the end of a possible second term, he would be 86.

– What he said

“Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy,” he announced in a video on Tuesday.

“To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for re-election as president of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.”

With the announcement, Mr Biden becomes the Democratic frontrunner in a race that could pit him for a second time against Republican contender Donald Trump.

Mr Biden won the 2020 presidential election against then Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

The Republican Party reacted to Mr Biden’s announcement by calling him “out of touch”.

“Biden is so out of touch that after creating crisis after crisis, he thinks he deserves another four years,” the Republican National Committee said in a statement.

“If voters let Biden ‘finish the job’, inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off,” it said.
