Lagos Building Collapse: Nine confirmed dead, 27 others rescued from rubble

A two-storey residential building in Lagos’s Amuwo-Odofin district crumbled on Thursday afternoon, killing at least nine people and trapping dozens of residents before a multi-agency emergency response concluded early Friday morning.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in a statement on Friday said search, rescue, and recovery operations have been concluded, with 27 people rescued alive and nine bodies recovered.

The building collapsed at approximately 12:47 p.m. on Thursday at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town. The incident adds to a recurring pattern of structural failures across Nigeria’s commercial capital, where rapid urbanization and lax enforcement of building codes have repeatedly proved fatal.

LASEMA’s Sharks Response Team from the Lekki Base and its Alpha Cobra Squad from Onipanu arrived at the scene within 40 minutes of the collapse, according to the statement issued by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale.

The scale of the operation drew resources from across Lagos’s emergency infrastructure. Agencies involved included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Red Cross, and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

All 27 rescued victims received immediate pre-hospital care before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Of the nine dead, four adults were confirmed dead before emergency responders arrived, while five additional victims — including a two-year-old girl — were recovered during the rescue operation. Their remains were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and release to their families.

Heavy machinery proved critical to the rescue timeline. A LASEMA heavy-duty excavator complemented two excavators deployed by CCECC, enabling responders to safely access trapped victims and complete the operation. Rescue operations ended at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Friday after responders reached ground zero.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to immediately assess the structural integrity of adjoining buildings and enforce compliance with building regulations in the area.
