Nigerian travellers booking flights with Air Peace face an additional cost if they require booking assistance through phone call.
The airline announced it will begin charging customers for reservations made through its call centre, a move likely to impact those who prefer phone bookings over online options.
The airline noted that with effect from May 1, an optional service charge of N1000 will be charged per passenger who require assistance with reservation bookings, according to a message sent to customers.
It said the fee applies to all passenger types but will be optional for those who seek booking assistance through the call centre.
“Effective from May 1st 2024, Air peace will introduce an optional service charge of N1000 per passenger who require assistance with reservation booking via our call center,” the airline said.
Passengers who prefer to book their reservations independently can continue to do so through their user-friendly website or mobile app, free of charge, it added.
The airline began the Lagos- London route last month and has received approval to start Abuja – London flights.
What’s driving the story?
It is not clear why the airline introduced the new charge.
A similar move by foreign airlines which compelled passengers to pay a call centre fee to buy, change, or cancel a ticket over the phone was aimed to encourage customers to carry out these actions online instead of via phone in hopes of lowering phone wait times, reports say.
The fees also help cover the higher costs airlines incur in keeping call centres staffed.
