Naira hits new low of 1,650 per dollar in intraday trading

The currency hit a similar intraday low of 1,606 on Thursday, continuing its struggle against the dollar.

The naira fell to another record low of 1,650 to the dollar in intraday trading on the official market on Monday, Reuters reported.

The currency hit a similar intraday low of 1,606 on Thursday, continuing its struggle against the dollar.

Naira has continued to depreciate since the Central Bank of Nigeria removed controls to allow the currency trade more freely in June. It exchanged officially at about 464 to a dollar before the inauguration of the administration of President Tinubu.

Since then, it has been devalued twice, fuelling a runaway inflation that has eroded incomes and savings in the country.

The central bank has taken several steps since January to boost dollar supply, pricing and investor confidence, the latest last week being the restriction of foreign-currency transfers by international oil companies.

Going forward, international oil companies may only remit half their export earnings to their parent companies, with the balance to be repatriated 90 days from the date of inflow of the export proceeds, the bank said in a circular dated Wednesday.

While the measures moderated volatility and increased foreign-exchange inflows into Nigeria, the currency has continued to depreciate.
