The State Security Service has confirmed the arrest of a University of Calabar professor accused of sexually abusing students.
The secret police said anti-corruption agency, ICPC, sought its collaboration after the professor, Cyril Ndifon, failed to honour invitations.
“The Commission had disclosed the refusal of NDIFON to honour its several invitations thus his eventual arrest in Calabar, Cross River State by its operatives on 4th October, 2023 based on a Court Order,” SSS spokesperson Peter Afunnanya said in a statement Thursday.
“However, the Service, following the Commission’s request and in the spirit of interagency cooperation, supported it for a successful operation.”
The University of Calabar suspended Ndifon in August, who at the time was dean of the school’s faculty of law over allegations of sexual abuse.

Vice chancellor Florence Obi told Pluboard the school launched an investigation after female law students held a protest accusing the lecturer of sexual harassment and extortion.
Ndifon, who did not respond to our request for comment, told Premium Times he did nothing wrong. He blamed his colleague teachers for the protest and said they instigated the demonstration because he won election as dean.
The lecturer faced a similar situation in 2015 when the university suspended him over allegations of raping a 20-year-old law student, an accusation he challenged and won in court.
He was later recalled and reinstated as dean of faculty after the suspension was lifted.
