Nigerian doctors suspend strike

The suspension came days after the doctors agreed, after meeting with the federal government, to suspend a planned nationwide protest.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its nationwide strike.

NARD president Emeka Orji announced the decision Friday evening. He said resident doctors would resume work on Saturday.

“We just suspended the strike. Work to resume at 8 am tomorrow. We will review progress made in two weeks,” Mr Orji said.

NARD embarked on an indefinite strike on July 26 to press for their demands from the federal government.

The doctors went on strike for five days in May over the government’s failure to meet their demands, following their ultimatum in January.

The strike crippled serviced at government-owned hospitals in the country.

The association, among other demands, asked for payment of the 2023 medical residency training fund (MRTF); immediate release of the circular on one-for-one replacement and upward review of the consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS).

Other demands include payment of outstanding arrears of consequential adjustment, hazard and skipping allowance.

Resident doctors are physicians who are on training to become specialists and consultants.
