Two Nigerian security agencies have clashed after a high court in Lagos granted bail to the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
The Nigeria Correctional Services sought to take Mr Emefiele into custody after the court ordered he be kept at the Ikoyi prison, but the States Security Services blocked the move, resulting in a stalemate.
Mr Emefiele remained in the courtroom as armed operatives from the two agencies mounted guard, as they pushed to take Mr Emefiele away.
George Emefiele, Mr Emefiele’s younger brother, said the suspended CBN governor was badly treated and that the SSS flouted the court’s order.
“Is this how to treat someone who has served this country for nine years,” he said during an interview on Arise TV Tuesday.
The SSS arraigned Mr Emefiele on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. He pleaded not guilty and was given bail on a bond of N20 million.
Mr Emefiele was arrested by the SSS on June 10, just hours after he was removed from his post by President Bola Tinubu. He has remained in their custody since. His tenure was scheduled to end in June 2024.
