Only four governors have picked commissioners 3 weeks after inauguration

Nigerians have paid more attention to the duration presidents and governors take to appoint ministers and commissioners after President Buhari's six-month delay in 2015.

Three weeks after their inauguration, only four of 28 newly sworn-in governors have begun the processes of setting up cabinets by appointing commissioners.

Nigerians have paid more attention to the duration presidents and governors take to appoint ministers and commissioners after President Muhammadu Buhari’s six-month delay in 2015. Many believe that needless wait contributed to the nation’s economic problems that year and subsequent recession a year later.

President Bola Tinubu has yet not appointed ministers nearly a month after coming into office. His team said the federal cabinet will be announced within 60 days, in keeping with a new law.

Like the president, most new governors – the latest elections took place in 28 of 36 states – do not appear in a hurry to pick commissioners.

A few have, however, taken action.

– Rivers

Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers was the first to appoint commissioners, just a day after his inauguration. He submitted names of four commissioners from the previous administration to the State House of Assembly for reappointment.

He picked Zaccheaus Adangor(Justice), Dakotinama George-Kelly (Works), Isaac Kamalu (Finance), and Chinedu Mmom (Education).

– Plateau

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau appointed one commissioner on May 30.

He named Philemon Dafi as the state attorney general and commissioner for justice.

– Ebonyi

On June 13, Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi submitted a list of 35 commissioner nominees.

The list has Stanley Mbam, Leonard Uguru, Oguzor Offia-Nwali,
Chinwe Okah, Victor Chukwu, Ben Uruchi-Odo, Felicia Nwankpuma, Donatus Ilang, Victor Chukwu, Chidi Onyia, Ann Aligwe and Awo Nwobashi.

Also nominated were Uchenna Igwe, Ben Odoh, Stanley Ogbuewu, Ngozi Obichukwu, Richard Idike, Chinedu Nkah, Ogbonnaya Obasi, Nkechi Iyioku and Felix Igboke.
