MTN Nigeria changes codes for airtime, data recharge

The adjustments come weeks after the Nigerian Communications Commission directed all mobile network operators to implement harmonised short codes.

Mobile telecoms company, MTN, has announced changes to its airtime and data reactivation codes.

The company changed its recharge activation code from *555* to *311* and data bundle subscription code from *131# to *312#.

– Key points to note

“Dear customer, this is to inform you of a change in our recharge activation code. You can now recharge your lines using *311*recharge pin# instead of *555*recharge pin#,” the company said in a message to customers.

“We encourage you to start using the code for your convenience. Thank you for choosing MTN.”

MTN also made changes in the code for the data bundle subscription.

“Dear Customer, you can now buy data bundles using *312# instead of *131#. We encourage you to start using the new code for your convenience. Thank you for choosing MTN,” the company said.

The adjustments come weeks after the Nigerian Communications Commission directed all mobile network operators to implement harmonised short codes.

Under the new arrangement, all phone companies in the country, including MTN, Globacom, Airtel and 9Mobile, are to use the same short codes for their key customer services.

The NCC said in March that the new policy was in line with its consumer-centric approach to telecom regulation.

The short codes include 300 for call centre/help desk, 301 for voice mail deposit, 302 for voice mail retrieval, 303 for borrow services, 305 for stop service, 310 for balance, and 311 for credit recharge.

The common code for data plan across networks is now 312, 321 is for share services, while 323 is for data plan balance.

The code, 2442, is retained for do-not-disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaint management, while 3232, is retained for porting services, also called mobile number portability.

The deadline for the transition to the new set of codes is May 17.

The NCC said the initiative will make life easier for consumers as it will now be easier for Nigerians to memorise single codes for various services across all mobile networks.

When subscribers move from one network to another, they do not need to learn new short codes to access services on their new network.
