The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially constituted a 155-member national campaign council for the 2027 general elections, naming ICT, strategist Ibrahim Abdulkarim as the Director-General of the campaign.
The campaign machinery brings together major political figures within the party, positioning former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson as the council chairman, with 2023 presidential standard-bearer Peter Obi serving as co-chairman.
Meanwhile, NDC National Chairman Cleopas Zuwoghe and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have been designated as vice-chairman and co-vice-chairman respectively, alongside party secretary Ikenna Enekweizu serving as secretary of the council.
The NDC campaign council announcement perhaps settles the perceived rancor within the party after the Obi- Kwankwaso (OK) Movement unveiled a 59-member campaign council in September.
Peter Obi, the party presidential election flag-bearer disowned the OK Movement campaign council at the time insisting it was constituted without his knowledge.
Obi aligned himself with NDC national leader and former Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson, who had earlier condemned the support group’s move as “unheard of” and a violation of party hierarchy.
A tech-driven approach to 2027
The appointment of Ibrahim Abdulkarim as Director-General signals a deliberate shift toward data-driven mobilization, digital strategy, and structured grassroots outreach as opposition coalitions realign ahead of the 2027 ballot.
In an official statement released in Abuja, party leadership emphasized that the newly assembled council is designed to run a disciplined, issue-focused campaign that resonates with citizens facing economic hardships.
“The National Campaign Council will provide strategic leadership, coordinate campaign activities across the country, and drive the mobilization of Nigerians behind the party’s vision of a new, just, and prosperous Nigeria,” the party stated.
Political analysts note that placing an ICT strategist at the operational helm of the campaign highlights the growing importance of digital voter engagement, transparent collation tracking, and youth demographic targeting in Nigeria’s evolving electoral landscape.
The 155-member council draws party figures, technocrats, and regional mobilizers from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, reflecting an effort to build a united front against the ruling establishment.
The campaign council is scheduled to be officially inaugurated in Abuja, where leadership will outline its blueprint for nationwide grassroots outreach, policy town halls, and structural coordination.
As political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, the NDC’s unveiling of its leadership structure sets the stage for a fiercely contested political season across the country.
