The All Progressives Congress (APC) has restructured and expanded its Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general election, enlisting high-profile opposition leaders and non-APC governors to head campaign operations in key states.
In an updated council list released on Tuesday, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike was appointed to coordinate campaign activities across Rivers State and the FCT. Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was named coordinator for Anambra, while Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke was designated coordinator for Osun State.
President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to formally inaugurate the restructured council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.
Rejigging Structure Ahead of 2027 Polls
The updated structure modifies an initial list released by the ruling party on August 22, adjusting senior executive designations and broadening state-level coordination networks.
Under the revised hierarchy:
- Director-General: Senator Abdulaziz Yari, former Governor of Zamfara State, retains his position heading overall campaign strategy.
- Deputy Vice-Chairmen: Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq serve as Deputy Vice-Chairmen I, II, and III, respectively.
- Regional Deputy Directors-General: Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni serves as Deputy Director-General I (North), while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin assumes the role of Deputy Director-General II (North). Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Deputy House Speaker Benjamin Kalu serve as Deputy Directors-General I and II for the South.
All 32 APC state governors have been assigned as coordinators for their respective states, while senior party elders—including Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Osoba, Senator George Akume, and Minister of Finance Wale Edun—were appointed as council advisers.
Cross-party dynamics and political context
The inclusion of Wike, Soludo, and Adeleke underscores an evolving political alignment within the ruling party’s coalition strategy.
Wike remains a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite serving in President Tinubu’s cabinet. Soludo secured re-election in Anambra State under the APGA platform, while Adeleke retained the Osun governorship during the state’s election cycle under Accord.
Addressing party stakeholders ahead of the council’s inauguration, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike defended cross-party political engagements aimed at national governance.
“Opposition parties just want to take over power; they are not telling Nigerians the truth,” Wike said during a public engagement in Abuja. “Our interest is ensuring stability, development, and progress for the country, regardless of political labels.”
The political campaign window opened on August 19 under guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and will run through January 14, 2027. President Tinubu faces major political challenges from opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
With Wednesday’s planned inauguration, the APC aims to harmonize its national machinery and solidify regional coalitions as political momentum builds toward the 2027 presidential poll.
