At least 20 people, including eight security personnel, have been killed after heavily armed gunmen ambushed a commercial convoy travelling under armed military escort in Zamfara State, north-western Nigeria.
The attack occurred at approximately 2:00 PM on Saturday along the route connecting Gwashi to Nasarawa market in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The convoy, carrying local traders and agricultural produce to the weekly market, was intercepted by dozens of assailants who opened fire from concealed positions.
The casualties include four Nigerian Army soldiers, three police officers, one officer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and 12 civilians. An additional 19 people sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries during the assault and are receiving medical treatment.
Local residents and search teams who combed the surrounding bushland after the gunfire subsided described chaotic scenes along the transit route.
Musa Danladi, a local resident who assisted community members and emergency teams in retrieving bodies from the scene, confirmed the casualty figures.
“The attack occurred around 2:00 PM on Saturday while the convoy was en route to Nasarawa market in Bukkuyum district from Gwashi,” Danladi said. “Four soldiers, three policemen, and a Nigerian Civil Defence Corps officer were among those killed, along with 12 civilians.”
A military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, corroborated the details of the attack, confirming that 19 survivors suffered gunshot wounds during the crossfire.
“Nineteen people were also wounded in the attack,” the military source stated, adding that reinforcement teams were dispatched to secure the axis and evacuate the injured.
Neither the Nigerian Army headquarters nor the Zamfara State Police Command had issued formal statements regarding the tactical engagement as of press time.
Escalating Insecurity Across North-West Nigeria
The violent ambush underscores the severe security challenges confronting rural communities across Zamfara State, where heavily armed gangs—locally known as bandits—frequently conduct raids, carry out mass abductions for ransom, and loot commercial transport networks.
The incident is part of a broader surge in armed violence across the state in recent months:
- September 2026: Gunmen intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Dakko-Damri feeder road in Bakura LGA, abducting six Islamic clerics (imams) travelling to Talata Mafara. State Police Spokesperson Yazid Abubakar confirmed that assailants armed with sophisticated weapons carried out the operation.
- June 2026: Suspected bandits attacked a residential quarter in the Low-Cost area of Kaura Namoda, abducting seven students from the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda.
Despite ongoing military offensives and the deployment of armed escorts to protect vital economic corridors, armed groups continue to exploit dense forest reserves along the borders of Zamfara, Kebbi, and Niger states to launch fatal strikes on rural market routes.
