2027: PDP group attacks APC governors over Wike

A PDP-aligned faction has hit back at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum over its opposition to political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group asserted that governors should focus on their governance records rather than attacking the political choices of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The reaction follows a resolution by the APC Governors’ Forum, announced by Imo State Governor and Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, stating that members will not support any political arrangement capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election or weakening the ruling party.

The pushback is largely targeted at the “Rainbow Coalition,” a cross-party platform promoted by Wike to drum up support for President Tinubu’s second term.

However, a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Jungudo Mohammed, dismissed the APC governors’ worries. The group said that Wike is “not their problem,” arguing instead that their anxiety stems from a fear of defeat at the polls due to underperformance.

“The APC Governors’ Forum should understand that Wike is not their problem; their problem is their poor governance and failure to meet the expectations of their people. Their opposition to Wike’s support is driven by fear—the fear that their poor records of performance will be exposed at the polls,” the statement read.

Defending Wike’s stance, the PDP faction noted that backing President Tinubu does not mean the opposition party has surrendered its mandate in other races.

Wike had earlier said that while he was fully committed to mobilizing support for the President’s re-election, he never promised that the PDP would refrain from fielding candidates for governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly positions.

The PDP group condemned the APC governors’ demand to restrict opposing candidates as a “complete political miscalculation”. They challenged incumbents who are confident in their achievements to welcome an open contest rather than block opponents.

“It is particularly revealing that governors who earlier claimed to be confident of their performance are now asking their opponents not to field candidates against them. If they have truly performed and retained the confidence of their people, they should welcome a contest and allow the electorate to decide,” the PDP stated.

The faction further advised the governors to channel their energy toward transparency, public accountability, and ensuring that local governments receive their due allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Concluding its position, the group affirmed that the PDP remains stable and fully prepared to present credible alternatives to Nigerians in the 2027 polls.
