Abuja Tremor: FG activates seismic watch, Alake urges calm

The Nigerian Government has placed its national seismic monitoring network on high alert and ordered hourly status reports after an earth tremor shook several buildings across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The tremor occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, causing brief panic among residents in affected parts of the capital. According to technical data captured by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako, the subterranean disturbance occurred at exactly 11:23:27 AM.

The agency confirmed that the tremor originated at a shallow depth of 1 kilometer and traveled across a distance of four kilometers within five seconds. However, geoscientists classified the event as a minor vibration measuring between I and II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale—a low level that poses no threat of structural destruction.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, speaking from Washington, D.C., where he attends an official assignment has directed the NGSA to submit hourly updates on all seismic developments across the nation’s capital and called for calm.

“Solid Minerals Development Minister Dele Alake has directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency to provide hourly updates of the seismic developments around Abuja, the Federal Capital to him for regular review and possible escalation to other relevant agencies,” stated the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise.

“This is a characteristic feature of a surface earth tremor that poses no threat to lives and properties except for the discomfort of the shake and fear of possible destruction,” the official statement noted, advising residents to go about their daily routines without anxiety.

Geological Context

While Nigeria lies outside the world’s major active earthquake and tectonic fault lines, low-intensity intraplate earth tremors are occasionally recorded across various regions, including Abuja, Kaduna, Kogi, Oyo, and Bayelsa states.

Scientists attribute these minor ground vibrations to localized stress releases along pre-existing intraplate fracture zones or minor subsurface settlement. The government’s decision to activate enhanced round-the-clock surveillance aims to gather real-time data to reassure the public and ensure rapid multi-agency coordination if further earth movements occur.
