The United Kingdom has increased its financial requirements for immigrants planning to study or work in the country starting in 2025. The adjustment is part of the government’s strategy to mitigate immigration’s impact on housing and the economy.
According to updated guidelines, applicants for study visas after January 2, 2025, will need to prove monthly financial support of £1,483 for living in London and £1,136 for areas outside London.
For instance, those enrolling in a one-year master’s programme in London must show £13,347 (£1,483 × 9 months) to cover living expenses, while students outside London will require £10,224 (£1,136 × 9 months).
These funds must be available in their bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying. At the current exchange rate, £13,347 translates to while £10,224 is the equivalent of ….
Updated financial thresholds
Previously, students were required to show £1,334 per month for courses in London and £1,023 for those outside London. Applicants already residing in the UK are exempted from these requirements, and nationals of specific countries are also excluded.
Nigerians are not exempted, meaning those planning to travel will have to hold the new amounts indicated.
Family Visa Income Changes
The financial requirements for family visas have also increased. The minimum annual income for sponsors has risen from £18,600 to £29,000 and will increase to £38,700 by early 2025. Additionally, families bringing children to the UK must budget £3,800 annually for the first child and £2,400 for each additional child.
Families unable to meet these requirements must prove their children are British or Irish citizens or nationals from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland without pre-settled status.
Applicants already living in the UK may qualify for exemptions if their children have resided in the country for at least seven years since birth.
Skilled Worker Visa Requirements
First-time skilled worker visa applicants must demonstrate an annual income exceeding £29,000 to cover living and accommodation costs. These funds must be maintained for at least 28 days before applying. However, employers sponsoring workers may cover the first month’s expenses.
Increased Visa Application Fees
The UK government has also raised fees for various visa categories, including tourist, family, spouse, child, and study visas. Exemptions apply to individuals with disabilities, healthcare workers, armed forces personnel, and talent visa applicants.
These changes reflect the UK government’s broader efforts to ensure that immigrants are financially equipped to support themselves and reduce dependency on public resources.
