A fresh attack by armed invaders on villages in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State has resulted in at least 15 deaths.
According to local reports, the first attack occurred on Wednesday, followed by another early Thursday morning, affecting five communities.
A villager who spoke to Daily Trust described the assault on Anyiin town, the headquarters of Logo LGA.
The attack began around 6:30 pm on Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning, leaving 15 people dead, several injured, and others missing. The attackers, who were heavily armed and numerous, “caught residents unaware, surrounded the town and shot sporadically in the air.
As people scampered for safety, they ran into the attackers’ well-orchestrated ambush,” a witness recounted.
The attacks have displaced residents from communities including Ukemberagya, Tswarev, Mbawar, Gov, Mbainange, and Tombo. Local security forces seemed overwhelmed by the scale of the assault.
Chief Joseph Anawah, a community leader, identified some of the victims and urged the government to revive the abandoned Mobile Police Barracks project near Anyiin to improve security. He also called on representatives to enhance security in the Gaambe-Tiev communities, which are frequently targeted.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene confirmed the attack but stated that detailed information was still pending.
“The attack in Anyiin is confirmed but no details at the moment. More information will be communicated to you as I receive it please,” Anene said.
