A suicide bomber died and injured two people on Sunday after detonating his suicide vest close to a mosque in Borno state, believed to have been the target of the attack, police said.
The attack happened in Biu local government area on Sunday at about 8 pm as worshippers were observing their night prayers.
“The male suicide bomber, who was suspected to be heading to the mosque, detonated the Improvised Explosive Device(IED) close to the roundabout, killing himself,” police spokesperson Daso Nahum said in a statement.
“Two passers-by who were wounded by the explosive were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
“A combined team of security personnel were immediately deployed to the scene of the incident to restore normalcy,” he said.
The bomb attack comes after a period of relative calm in the area, which is the hotbed of the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram.
Mr Nahum urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during Ramadan when late-night prayers are frequent. He advised people to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
