US vice-president Kamala Harris calls for “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza

“The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris has issued a call for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

Speaking on Sunday from Selma, Alabama, against the backdrop of the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge, Harris delivered a blunt message directed at Israel, urging the country to take immediate action to ease the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

Harris emphasized the severity of the situation, describing the conditions in Gaza as “inhumane” and stressing the imperative for Israel to do more to facilitate the flow of aid to the region. She called on the Israeli government to open new border crossings, refrain from imposing unnecessary restrictions on aid delivery, and ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel and convoys.

“People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane and our common humanity compels us to act,” Harris said. “The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses.”

The vice president’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas militants, with the Biden administration facing mounting pressure to intervene and broker a ceasefire. Harris’s direct criticism of Israel marks a significant departure from previous US policy, reflecting growing frustration within the government over the handling of the conflict.

The comments appear to be the sharpest rebuke of Israel yet by a senior leader in the US government over the conditions in Gaza.

In addition to calling for a cessation of hostilities, Harris urged Hamas to accept a deal to release hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire. She emphasized the need for all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of civilians and work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The United States recently conducted its first aid airdrop into Gaza, signalling a renewed effort to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need. Harris is scheduled to meet with Israeli officials, including war cabinet member Benny Gantz, to further address the situation and press for immediate action.

Ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel have been ongoing, with mediators from Qatar and the United States working to broker a truce. However, a comprehensive agreement has yet to be reached, underscoring the complexity of the situation and the challenges involved in achieving lasting peace in the region.
