Dataphyte partners Archivi.ng to tell Nigerian stories with AI

The partnership combines Dataphyte's expertise in data collection and analytics with Archivi.ng's repository of digitized historical news content.

Nigerian media research and data analytics organisation Dataphyte has announced a partnership with Archivi.ng to provide easy access to information about Nigeria’s past, and allow data-driven storytelling that is supported by rich historical context.

As an Africa-focused social impact organization, Dataphyte specializes in data access, analysis, and localized research. Archivi.ng, a non-profit organization, set for itself an ambitious task of digitally archiving old Nigerian newspapers since the country’s independence and making them accessible to all.

Archive.ng aims to document one newspaper a day, from January 1, 1960, till December 31, 2010. The organization says since its launch in 2020, it has digitised 4,029 newspapers and raised $37,416 to support its work.

The new partnership combines Dataphyte’s expertise in real-time, localized data collection and analytics with Archivi.ng’s extensive repository of digitized historical news content to power Nubia AI, Dataphyte’s AI storytelling platform.

Nubia AI employs artificial intelligence to extract meaning and context from the data, with which it weaves together compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences. By incorporating historical data, Nubia.ai can provide context to contemporary challenges, celebrate forgotten heroes, and shed light on the evolution of African cultures and societies.

Archivi.ng’s vast collection of digitized historical newspapers will help Nubia.ai generate insightful narratives that bridge the gap between the past and present, open access to data and ensure historical information about Nigeria are available for research and learning, the organizations said Tuesday in a statement.

“With Archivi.ng as our partner, Nubia.ai takes a giant leap forward in its ability to tell the full story of Africa,” said Joshua Olufemi, the founder and chief executive officer of Dataphyte.

“By combining real-time data with historical news insights, we can create a richer, more nuanced understanding of the continent’s past, present, and potential.”

Archivi.Ng founder, Fua’d Lawal, said: “This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration in unlocking the potential of data. By making historical African news accessible to AI, we open doors to untold stories and pave the way for a more inclusive and informed future.”

The deal is the third content partnership Dataphyte has signed to train Nubia AI, following collaborations with Daily Trust and BusinessDay.
