Pakistan launches retaliatory strikes in Iran, escalating tensions

Iranian state media reported that the Pakistani strikes resulted in casualties, including women and children.

Tensions between Pakistan and Iran escalated after the Pakistani air force launched retaliatory strikes Thursday morning against targets inside Iran, responding to an attack on its soil that killed two children Tuesday.

In a statement, Pakistan’s foreign ministry confirmed the strikes, targeting “terrorist hideouts” in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province, bordering Pakistan.

“This action was a manifestation of Pakistan’s unflinching resolve to protect and defend its national security against all threats,” the statement said.

Iranian state media reported that the Pakistani strikes resulted in casualties, including women and children. The exact number of casualties remains unclear.

Iran condemned the action, calling it a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and demanding explanations.

Rising Tensions

The strikes come two days after Iran launched an attack on Pakistani territory allegedly targeting “Israel-linked fighter bases.”

Both countries have long accused each other of harboring militants who carry out attacks in regions along their shared border.

Pakistan had warned Iran of “serious consequences” for the Tuesday attack and withdrew its ambassador from Tehran.

The escalation of tensions raises concerns about a potential wider conflict between the two Muslim-majority nations.

The international community, including the United Nations, has urged both sides to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.

It remains unclear whether the recent strikes will lead to further retaliatory actions or if both sides will seek diplomatic solutions to ease tensions.

The situation on the border remains volatile, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
