Halima Mahmud, a 21-year-old final year Electrical Engineering student at the University of Abuja, has been found after a terrifying ordeal, her family said.
Her family had declared her missing after she disappeared from the university campus on Tuesday.
According to her sister, Amina, Halima was dumped along the AYA axis of Abuja by her abductors on Wednesday at about 7:34 p.m., according to Premium Times.
The student was reported missing after departing the UniAbuja main campus on Airport Road on Tuesday. Amina said her sister was picked up by her in car in front of the university’s gate and diverted elsewhere.
Her abductors headed to Zuba, a suburb of the capital, instead of Giri area where Halima wanted to stop.
When she complained, the abductors hit her mouth, preventing her from speaking, and attempted to force a concoction down her throat. When that did not work, they decided to throw her out, but not without seizing her belongings, including her scarf, shoes, phone, and Abaya.
She was thrown out near A.Y.A, where a passer-by found her and used their phone to contact her parents.
“They used something to hit her mouth and she couldn’t speak again,” recounted Amina, Halima’s sister, describing the abduction. “She was thrown out by A.Y.A where there is a bad spot.”
Amina said the incident has been reported to the SSS office in Asokoro, and they plan to provide a statement to the police as requested.
Rising insecurity in Nigeria’s capital
This comes amid rising insecurity in the FCT and other parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North, with an increase in kidnappings and killings.
In the last two weeks, at least two families, comprising children were kidnapped with their parents and at least two minors killed after delayed payment of ransom.
Assailants took the families from an estate in Dutse neighbourhood of Bwari area council and demanded the families pay N60 million as ransom for each. When the money did not come immediately, they killed two of their victims and increased the ransom money.
On Wednesday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said the government had taken measures to address insecurity in the capital.
Police inspector general Kayode Egbetokun also announced the formation of a new special squad to address insecurity in Abuja.
