At least 100 passengers were on board a boat that capsized in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday afternoon, the government said. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
The boat, which departed from Dugga Mashaya in Dugga ward, was heading to Wara market in Kebbi state when the incident occurred. It was reportedly carrying a heavy load of goods, grains, and other valuables, in addition to the passengers.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), local divers, agency personnel, and local government officials are working together to search for survivors and recover the bodies of those who may have died.
Latest tragedy
This tragedy is the latest in a long line of deadly boat accidents in Nigeria.
Last June, more than 100 people drowned after a boat carrying them down the River Niger in Kwara state capsized. The vessel was carrying around 300 passengers travelling from Kwara state to Niger state after a wedding.
Since then, at least one boat accident has been reported each month, with dozens of deaths.
Overloaded boats, poor maintenance, and unforgiving currents are often cited as contributing factors to these accidents.
Following the tragedy, many Nigerians are calling for stricter safety regulations, better boat maintenance, and increased enforcement on waterways.
