Nigeria probes Abuja-bound aircraft’s “mistaken” landing in Asaba

The airline claims the diversion was done due to poor weather conditions.

The Nigerian government has launched an investigation after a passenger airplane bound for Abuja “mistakenly” landed in Asaba, Delta state.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said it was investigating the incident and the “confusion it has created among passengers.”

The United Airline flgith NUA 0506, which took off Sunday afternoon from Lagos, was scheduled to arrive the capital, but passengers said they soon realized they were in Asaba, after the crew had duly announced that they had arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

“Nigeria my country. We departed Lagos about an hour ago on to Abuja, and upon arrival, the cabin crew confidently announced that we’ve arrived Abuja, only for us to realize that we landed in Asaba. Apparently, our pilot was given wrong flight plan from Lagos,” X user, Dawisu, wrote Sunday.

Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, head corporate communications of United Nigeria Airlines said in a statement said that the flight was “temporarily diverted” to Asaba due to poor weather conditions.

“At all material time, the pilots of the aircraft were aware of the temporary diversion and were properly briefed,” he said.

“However, a wrong announcement was made by cabin crew upon landing in Asaba creating confusion among the passengers.

Foreign lease aircraft suspended

The NCAA director – general, Musa Nuhu said “preliminary steps have been taken pending conclusions of ongoing investigation.”

“The Authority wishes to reassure the traveling public that it will leave no stone unturned as it has always done in the past to ensure continued safety of the aviation industry,” he said in a statement.

Local media reported that the NCAA suspended all foreign lease aircraft under United Nigeria Airlines pending the outcome of its investigation.
