Lagos police officer sentenced to death for killing pregnant lawyer

The convict was sentenced to die by hanging.

A court in Lagos has sentenced a police officer to death for killing a lawyer in December 2022.

Justice Ibironke Harrison of the Lagos High Court found Darambi Vandi, an assistant superintendent of police, guilty for the Christmas Day shooting that shocked the nation, and sentenced him to death by hanging.

The victim, Omobolanle Raheem, was driving home with her children and a sister after a church service when they ran into a police check point at Ajah area of Lagos.

A witness said the woman was trying to turn under the Ajah Bridge when the police shot at her vehicle, hitting the woman.

The trial started in January, with multiple witnesses giving evidence.

Mr Vandi denied being responsible for the killing, saying the evidence put forward by the prosecutors did not link him to the shooting.

The judge determined otherwise, saying the prosecution established sufficient oral and documentary evidence linking the suspended officer to the crime.

Police officers have killed unarmed civilians in similar shootings before, but only a few of these cases have resulted in successful trials and convictions.
