France’s ambassador to Niger has left the country, marking a significant development in the strained relations between the two nations.
The departure came roughly a month after the military government in Niger ordered the expulsion of Ambassador Sylvain Itte. President Emmanuel Macron had also announced the withdrawal of French troops from the country in response to deteriorating diplomatic ties.
The rift between Niger and France, its former colonial ruler, escalated following the military coup in Niamey in July. The junta which took control demanded the expulsion of Ambassador Itte within 48 hours at the end of August, citing actions by France that they deemed detrimental to Niger’s interests.
Initially, France resisted the expulsion order, maintaining its stance that the military government lacked legitimacy.

They continued to call for the reinstatement of the ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum. However, President Macron’s recent announcement signaled a shift in France’s approach. He confirmed that Ambassador Itte would return to Paris, and French troops would be withdrawn from Niger.
The news of Ambassador Itte’s departure was subsequently verified by the president’s office in Paris.
Since the military takeover in July, Niamey has witnessed nearly daily protests against France. Supporters of the junta have gathered outside a French military base for extended periods, demanding the withdrawal of French troops.
The departure of the French ambassador represents a significant development in the ongoing diplomatic crisis between Niger and France.
On 26 July 2023, former Presidential Guard Commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, led a coup d’état that toppled the country’s elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. Mr. Bazoum has remained in custody since the coup while General Tchiani proclaimed himself leader of a new military junta.
