#Japa: Four upcoming foreign fellowships, scholarships Nigerians can apply

Applications for some of the programmes are opening this week.

In recent years, a growing number of young Nigerians have seized opportunities offered by international scholarships to leave the country.

This phenomenon, colloquially known as “Japa,” has gained traction as Nigerians face increasing economic hardship home.

For young people, pursuing academic endeavours in foreign land has turned out to be the most preferred and straightforward approach.

In the coming days and weeks, there are several noteworthy scholarship opportunities that aspiring scholars should keep a keen eye on. The four to be opened soon include:

– Mandela Washington fellowship

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a programme of the U.S. government for young African leaders.

In the last decade, the Mandela Washington Fellowship has taken nearly 5,800 young leaders from Sub-Sahara Africa to the United States for leadership training.

Established in 2014, the fellowship focuses on young African leaders between the age of 25 and 35.

“The Fellowship has been a life-changing experience for me.  As a result of the Fellowship, I have built very strong networks with Africans and Americans.  I have renewed confidence and determination to contribute to my community,” one of the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni said.

The selected fellows will participate in a six-week leadership program learning courses like Business, Civic Engagement, or Public Management by U.S colleges or universities.

The application for the new batch of the fellowship will open on August 15 and close on September 12.

The eligibility for the fellowship includes not being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States and must be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa among others.

– Chevening Scholarship

Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarships and fellowships programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations.

The scholarship allows the awardees picked from any part of the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK.

However, after completing their period of study in the UK, scholars and fellows are mandated to return home and join the Chevening global network of over 55,000 alumni.

The 2024/25 Chevening Scholarships application will open in September 2023. Get more information on how to apply here.

– Yenching Academy Scholarship

The Yenching Academy annually enrols approximately 120 new students from both the Chinese Mainland and abroad, to study, live, and learn together. International students comprise roughly 80% of the student body, according to the school.

The scholarship is a fully funded master’s scholarship with a two-year duration, and covers tuition, airfare, monthly stipend, accommodation, and health insurance.

Recruitment information for the 2024 cohort will be available in August 2023 (later in the month). Get more information here.

– World Bank Spring Legal Internship

The World Bank Legal Internship Program allows individuals to bring new perspectives, innovative ideas, and the latest research experiences into the World Bank’s daily operations and improve their legal skills while working in a multicultural environment.

The World Bank Legal Internship Programme is offered thrice a year for a period of a maximum of three months at World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and in certain selected country offices for currently enrolled law school students.

The application period will commence on September 1 and end on September 30 (The proposed internship period is for 10-12 weeks, typically between March and May, depending on prevailing needs).

Qualified interns will be involved in tasks such as research, legal analysis, and supervision among others. Learn more about it here.
