Facebook owner Meta unveils ‘Threads’ as Twitter rival

The new app is set for launch on Thursday, days after Musk announced a temporary cap on how many posts users can read on the site.

Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk’s proposal to limit the number of daily tweets sparked a search for alternative platforms. Donald Trump’s Truth Social experienced temporary downtime due to overwhelming traffic, many from Nigerians.

Now, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to unveil Threads, a new app to entice users seeking a Twitter alternative. The platform will be a direct rival to Twitter.

Threads, dubbed as Instagram’s text-based conversation app, offers users the convenience of maintaining their existing username and following the same accounts as on the photo-sharing platform.

It is expected to be free and will have none of the new restrictions Twitter has announced.

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow,” the description on the App Store says.

Threads was available on the Google Play store in Europe on Monday morning and later became available on the Apple App Store by Monday night.

Blending features from Instagram and Twitter, the app caters to the interests of current Instagram users and those seeking a fresh social media encounter.
