Dozens killed as communities in Taraba fight

Witnesses say at least 50 people died in fighting between people belonging to the Wurkun and Karimjo ethnic groups

Dozens of people have been killed in a fresh outbreak of ethnic violence in Taraba state.

Police said the number of those killed was unconfirmed as the area where fighting took place was difficult to reach.

Witnesses told Premium Times a least 50 died in fighting between people belonging to the Wurkun and Karimjo ethnic groups in Karim Lamido local government.

The north-east state, home to some 77 ethnic groups, frequently experiences ethnic-related violence. In May, fighting erupted following the appointment of a Wurkun native as the local chief with about 20 people killed.

Last week, Gov Agbu Kefas met with traditional rulers from the area and appealed for peace, telling the chiefs that “as the custodians of our traditions and culture, you possess a unique power to shape the hearts and minds of our people.”

Police spokesperson Usman Abdullahi said the latest incident began around 3 a.m. on Saturday. He described the fighting as “guerilla attacks”, according to Premium Times.

“In the last few days, there have been pockets of guerilla attacks in some communities in the area, whereby the Karimjos attack the Wurkuns, and the Wurkuns also attack in return, or the Wurkuns attack the Karimjos, and they also attack in return,” he said.

Mr Abdullahi said a joint team of military and police personnel were in the area to restore order.
