Buhari arrives Eagles Square to hand over to Tinubu as president

Mr Buhari, who had been a military ruler between 1983 and 1985, is stepping down after eight years as civilian president.

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived the Eagles Square in Abuja where he is to hand over the reins of power to Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s new president.

Mr Buhari rode in a presidential motorcade ahead of a military parade during which he will receive his final salute as commander-in-chief of the Nigerian armed forces.

Mr Buhari, who had been a military ruler between 1983 and 1985, is stepping down after eight years as civilian president. He is second civilian president in Nigeria’s history to complete full two four-year terms, after President Olusegun Obasanjo did the same in 2007

Mr Tinubu was declared winner of the presidential election of Feb. 25. The former Lagos. state governor will be sworn in as the fifth president since the return of democracy in 1999.

He arrived the Eagles Square earlier alongside Kashim Shettima who will be sworn in as the vice president.

The event is being attended by government officials and foreign leaders and diplomats from around the world.
