Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s declared president-elect, has returned to the country after a one-month stay abroad. Mr Tinubu returned alongside his wife, Oluremi Tinubu.
The former Lagos governor arrived the presidential wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 4.30 p.m on Monday, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.
He was received by supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress led by Kashim Shettima, his running mate, James Faleke, secretary of the dissolved APC presidential election council, Ade Omole, its director of diaspora; Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau, and a former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
– Deserved rest?
Mr Tinubu left Nigeria on March 21 weeks after the Feb. 25 presidential election in which he was declared winner. The outcome of the poll is being contested by the opposition parties including the PDP and the Labour Party.
Mr Tinubu’s long silence and absence sparked speculations about his health and fitness ahead of his inauguration on May 29. His office said he travelled for a “deserved rest”.
“I’m happy to be back. I have rested, I’m refreshed and I’m ready for the task ahead,” he was quoted in a statement by Tunde Rahman, his media aide.
“Forget about what the rumour mill may have told you. I’m strong, very strong.”
