Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party has won re-election as governor Adamawa state, the Independent National Electoral Commission announced Tuesday.
Fintiri contested the March 18 election against Aishatu Binani of the All Progressives Congress and other candidates, but the process was declared inconclusive.
A supplementary election in 69 polling units weekend was again marred by controversy after an unqualified Inec official hijacked the process and declared Binani winner. The electoral body annulled the announcement by its resident electoral commissioner and suspended collation yet again.
On Tuesday, it announced that Fintiri scored 430,788 votes while Binani got 398,788 votes.
“Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes in the election is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” the returning officer, Mohammed Mele, said in Yola, the state capital.
– Third term as governor
Fintiri, 56, is a former speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly. He became the acting governor following the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako in July 2014, and served for four months.
He later handed control to Bala James Ngilari after three months.
In 2019, he won his first full term as PDP candidate after defeating Bindo Jibrilla of the APC.
