Elon Musk sets up new firm to challenge OpenAI

Musk has been openly opposed to “giant AI experiments.”

Elon Musk has created a new company called X.AI that is dedicated to artificial intelligence. This development was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

– A key point to note

A Nevada filing shows that Musk is the director and Jared Birchall, the director of Musk’s family office, is the secretary of the company. The filing also reveals that the business was incorporated on March 9, 2023.

– Why this matters

Musk has been openly opposed to OpenAI, the AI organization he co-founded in 2015 but left in 2018. He recently signed a letter calling for a pause on “giant AI experiments.”

OpenAI has become hugely popular lately and has helped push Microsoft and Google to integrate AI tools more into their products.

Rumours have circulated recently about Musk starting an AI company. Business Insider reported that he had purchased thousands of GPUs for an upcoming generative AI product.

The Financial Times also reported that Musk planned to create an AI firm to compete with the OpenAI, the firm that owns ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft.

Musk reportedly sought funding from investors in his companies Tesla and SpaceX to get the new company started.

However, during an interview on Twitter Spaces, Musk did not mention anything about his plans to build an AI company when asked about the GPUs he purchased.

The X.AI name matches the branding of the X Corp. name he has assigned to Twitter and his vision of an “everything app.”
