Nigerians applying for passports to start paying for NIN verification

Citizens will pay N1000 if they are applying in the country.

Nigerians applying for international passports will soon begin to pay for the verification of their National Identification Numbers before the application could go forward, the government has said.

– Key points to note

Citizens will pay N1000 if they are applying in the country, while those applying for passports from other African countries will pay $5. Those based or applying from other parts of the world are to pay $15. The change takes effect from April 1.

The National Identity Management Commission, which issues NINs to citizens 18 years and above, said the fees will be taken as it has an agreement with the Immigration Services to use the verification of national identification numbers to “significantly improve the quality of service, accuracy, and speed of passport services.”

“The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to inform the general public that it has devised and agreed on a framework with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to significantly improve the quality of service, accuracy, and speed of passport services through the timely verification of the National Identification Number (NIN),” the agency said in a statement Monday.

“NIMC and NIS have agreed on a revised applicant journey that will significantly improve the speed of passport issuance/re-issuance and reduce the traffic visiting the NIS office(s),” spokesperson Kayode Adegoke who signed the statement said.
