TikTok introduces paywall feature so users can make money

The new feature will allow videos of up to 20 minutes and can be placed behind paywall.

The popular video-sharing app, TikTok, has announced an avenue for creators to monetize their contents.

– Key things to know

The new feature will allow eligible creators to make money from their shared videos. They will be able to share longer videos that will be available behind a paywall where viewers can pay to access the content.

TikTok said on its website on Tuesday that the new feature called “Series” will help creators to make money from their contents and will be able to accommodate up to 80 videos with a lengthy viewing period.

“Series enables eligible creators to post collections of premium content behind a paywall which viewers can purchase for access. One Series can include up to 80 videos, each up to 20 minutes long, giving people a new, longer format to watch their favourite creators and content,” TikTok said.

TikTok is mainly mobile-based although users can watch TikTok videos using the web app. The platform allows users to get creative with their contents using filters, stickers, voiceovers, sound effects, and background music.

Tiktok has more than 700 million users currently and is increasingly popular in Nigeria. Previously, content creators were able to post 15-second, 1- minute, 3 – minute or 10-minute videos.

With “Series”, longer videos of up to 20 minutes will be posted and this will create more competition for other video-sharing apps like Youtube.

The competition expects to be extended to other social media apps with video features.

According to the release, creators can choose a price that best fits their content value.

“Creators can select how much their Series should cost that best reflects the value of their exclusive content, which can be purchased for access via direct in-video links or through a creator’s profile,” the report said.

“Series is currently only available to select creators with applications to join opening in the coming months. As we’re in the early stages of Series, we’ll continue to listen closely to our community for feedback,” the report said.
